Chris Abdul Hakim Martinez is a third year PhD student in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His dissertation focuses on the history of the bauxite mining sector in the Republic of Guinea to explore questions of decolonization, development, and economic sovereignty in 20th century West Africa. His research covers the history and political economy of extractive industries, industrial development, labor militancy and organizing the history of capitalism, and radical Pan-Africanism in Guinée Conakry.
